-The glass is half full if it was being filled and the filling stopped at halfway.
-The glass is half empty if it was being emptied and the emptying stopped at halfway.

These two states of the glass happen quite a bit if you are visiting the  beach bars on Jost Van Dyke. Don't worry, they don't remain at the half-way mark for very long in either direction. Cheers!

An individual coral, known as a polyp, is a very tiny animal (a few millimeters in diameter) looking something like a sea-anemone. As it grows, it secretes a limestone skeleton cup around itself and lives inside for protection. When a polyp dies, its skeleton or "house" remains intact.

The name "hard coral" comes from skeleton around the polyp.

Coral polyps live side by side in colonies.

#5

When you look at a coral formation you are looking at a colony of corals or lots of polyp "houses". Many identical coral individuals next to each other, forming a texture or pattern. The pattern's characteristics are determined by the coral's species.

The colony shape is also influenced by its environment (sunlight, temperature and water movement). Generally, branching coral is found in calmer waters and smooth coral is found in more turbulent waters.

No one seems to have the exact number. The current guess is in the thousands. Corals are divided into two general categories, soft corals and hard corals. Soft Corals are treelike and flexible. Hard corals are the reef builders.
